Holy Basil – Relieve Anxiety and Stress Naturally

Administrator

Unending deadlines at work. Homework and exams at school. Unfinished house chores. Illnesses, chronic and otherwise. No matter how calm a person is, stress will always find a way to wreak havoc in one’s life. When the body feels stressed, it may manifest as symptoms such as having sleep problems, forgetfulness, and exhaustion.

While antidepressants and anti-anxiety medicine such as diazepam usually works, there is a more natural way to manage and prevent stress-induced anxiety.

Holy basil (tulsi or tulasi in India) is not just a cooking herb. More than 300 years ago, it was known as the “Elixir of Life” since all parts of the plant was used to treat a lot of illnesses. The extract was used as treatment for cough, headaches, bronchitis, wounds, and even ear aches. Fortunately for us, it was also commonly used to help tame anxiety and stress. [1]

The leaves can be used as a substitute to regular tea or coffee. This bitter yet spicy caffeine-free drink is calming and makes the drinker focused and relaxed. It also helps lessen one’s anti-social side since it is relaxing and endowed with an anti-anxiety effect. [2]

Not all people are tea drinkers. If you feel that you will not achieve the 500 milligram daily recommended dose of holy basil extract, you can also opt to take it in pill form. You can easily buy it over-the-counter with no prescription needed. But if you are taking other medication for any pre-existing condition, it is deemed best to consult with your doctor first so he can prescribe the correct dosage for you.
