Pneumonia is an infectious disease that can range in seriousness from mild to life-threatening. Hence, it’s important to detect the disease as early as possible to prevent serious consequences, especially for adults older than 65, infants, and young children.
Symptoms of pneumonia caused by bacteria are easily detected. These include:
- Cough, likely with mucus that may be rusty, green or tinged with blood
- Shortness of breath
- Shaking, chills
- Chest pain that feels worse when you cough or breathe in
- Fast heartbeat
- Tiredness, feeling weak
- Nausea and vomiting
Note that newborns and infants may not show any signs or symptoms. Older adults may have fewer or milder symptoms. It’s important to consult with your doctor especially when dealing with pneumonia in high-risk individuals.
